As for the identity of the product in question, speculation naturally turns to an Apple television set, which has been rumored for a launch late this year or early next year. On the electronics side, Starck has experience in speaker and headphone design, with his Parrot Zikmu wireless speaker with iPhone/iPod dock being sold through Apple’s online store in some countries. Starck’s Parrot Zik headphones are also due for release later this year. Consequently, it is unclear from his brief comments whether he is working on an actual Apple product or something else for which he is coordinating with Apple.

For example we all know “Lepton” the famous tea brand, lepton is under an umbrellas called Unilever, and Unilever’s products include foods, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. The company owns more than 400 brands, although its 25 largest brands account for over 70% of total sales. Unilever focuses resources on 13 “billion-Euro brands”, each of which has annual sales in excess of €1 billion. Unilever organizes its brands into two main categories: Food and Beverages, and Home and Personal Care. Here are some brands:

Now imagine if all these brand has been named under Unilever and something wrong happened to the brand, what kind of force Unilever need to change each single brand direction (positioning), it will need a massive force and money to change it, this will be so hard on them, but if we go back to the existing situation that Unilever has it now, its easy to change the position of any brand because each brand has its own direction, farce and mass.

Positioning is very important element for any brand because if we nail positioning and targeting all will fall in place.

The fundamental purpose of an alliance is to facilitate collaboration and varying degrees of integration between companies without necessitating a merger or an acquisition, though it can often lead to a merger or an acquisition. Exhibit 1 reflects the full spectrum of the types of inter-corporate transactions arrayed by the level of commitment and degree of integration between the parties.

At the far left is outsourcing; at the opposite extreme is M&A. Corporate alliances lie in between. While many refer to their suppliers or customers as their “partners,” not every party that one conducts business with is a true partner, nor is every relationship a true alliance.

As the chart highlights, licensing is a contractual alliance with little collaboration. Collaborative alliances include shared resource arrangements, partial acquisitions and JVs. Although these collaborations start out as contractual, it is not uncommon for them to evolve into a more permanent equity-based structure.

The second type is cross-equity transactions, where each partner becomes an equity stakeholder in the other, such as the exchange of shares between EDS and Ariba.

Next are joint ventures, of which there are two kinds, solution joint ventures and platform joint ventures. A solution joint venture is where two or more companies, usually of similar size or value, form a new entity to exploit a business opportunity that neither could do alone. The teaming up between GE Capital and BankOne to create Monogram Credit Services illustrates a solution joint venture.

A platform JV is one in which two or more partners realize that even together they are missing a critical core competency or competencies to meet their strategic cooperative objectives. In order to move quickly, they form a JV to purchase a company or a stake in a company that has the missing core competency. Platform alliances work best when the opportunity is very large and the window of time for exploitation is narrow. In other words, speed is of the essence. An example of a platform JV is the joint purchase of Midlands Electricity (UK) by General Public Utilities and Cinergy. It is important to note that just 750 equity alliances and joint ventures were formed in the U.S. throughout the 1970s. Now, however, thousands are formed annually in the U.S. alone. Cellular-capable models of the new iPad also support 4G LTE as had been rumored by multiple sources. Supporting data speeds of up to 21 Mbps on HSPA+, 42 Mbps on dual-carrier HSPA+, and 73 Mbps on LTE, the new iPad offers a significant improvement in cellular data capabilities.

- 9to5Mac reports that the “J2A” iPad for which part numbers leaked last week is now showing up in Apple’s inventory systems as a “4G” device.

- In a bit of curious timing, Liquidmetal Technologies late yesterday announced that it had begun “shipping commercial parts to several of its customers world-wide”. While the customers are unnamed, shipments are said to have begun in December and will be continuing in the months ahead. Apple acquired the rights to Liquidmetal’s technology related to amorphous metal alloys for use in all consumer electronics applications back in 2010, while Liquidmetal has retained its rights in all other fields of use.

Makers in Apple’s iPad supply chain have started delivering samples of 7.85-inch iPads for verification, with volume production likely to begin in the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest, according to industry sources.

The report suggests that Apple will price the smaller iPad in the range of $249-$299, with a rumored 8 GB iPad 2 occupying a price point at $349-$399. The report also claims that Apple could continue offering the 16 GB iPad 2 at $449 to fill out a low-end grouping below the flagship iPad 3 lineup.

We previously mocked up what a 7.85-inch iPad would look like, creating print-suitable documents to allow readers to test out the size for themselves either on paper or displayed on a current 9.7-inch iPad. With the device rumored to carry the same 1024×768 resolution of the iPad 2 but at a smaller physical size, some user interface elements would become rather small, but primary elements such as icons and the keyboard seem very usable at the smaller size.
